About the plant: Sage (Salvia officinalis) has traditionally been associated with cognitive benefits for decades. Recent work performed at Oxford University lead to the identification of a particularly interesting sage extract that showed superior bioactivity in their patented Chronoscreen system. Upon this discovery, the company called Sibelius Natural Products was formed as a spin-out from the university. Their unique sage extract is patent-pending and we are proud that Clutch is the first beverage in the world to include it as part of our patent-pending recipe.
About the plant: Like sage, green oat (Avena sativa) has a long tradition for use as a mental tonic dating back to medieval times. Neuravena® is the extract of a distinct variety of oat selected for its superior biological activity profile. The ingredient originally invented by the innovative plant ingredient company Frutarom, which was recently purchased by international health food powerhouse IFF Health, is produced by means of the state-of-the-art EFLA®Hyperpure process, and has been the dedicated subject of numerous human clinical studies.
About the plant: Sunphenon® is a unique green tea (Camellia sinensis) extract produced by the Japanese biotech company Taiyo. While green tea is fairly common in beverages and almost exclusively added for its caffeine and EGCG content, we have included it in Clutch as a distinct extract without both caffeine and EGCG (which we prefer to avoid) but with a high content of the plant-derived amino acid L-theanine, which has been the subject of numerous exciting clinical studies.
About the nutrient: Despite being a delicious, sparkling and clear drink, Clutch actually has high dietary fiber. The fiber we selected for our product is called Sunfiber®, another awesome ingredient produced by Taiyo. Sunfiber® is derived from guar beans, and we are excited to be the first commercial beverage to feature it. Aside from the fact that adding invisible bean fiber is pretty cool in itself, Sunfiber® has been shown to be highly stable, low FODMAP and last but not least have better tolerability than most other fiber sources. Importantly, this is based on dedicated clinical evidence.
In case you wonder why we included fiber in a brain drink, fiber is an important macronutrient that is underrepresented in Western diets. Furthermore, fiber acts as a prebiotic, feeding beneficial bacteria in the gut, which is important for several reasons, not least because of the increasing amount of evidence highlighting the existence and significance of the gut/brain axis.
About the nutrient: While Palatinose™ (isomaltulose) is technically a sugar, it distinguishes itself from other more common sugars by being less rapidly digested. This in turn will lead to a lower increase in and stabilization of blood sugar, which can have numerous positive physiological effects.
Specifically, the approved EFSA health claim for Palatinose goes: Consumption of foods/drinks containing isomaltulose instead of other sugars induces a lower blood glucose rise after their consumption compared to foods/drinks containing other sugars.
While not being the reason that Palatinose was included in Clutch, another interesting, approved health claim is that it is simply better for the teeth than other sugars. Specifically, consumption of foods/drinks containing isomaltulose instead of other sugars contributes to the maintenance of tooth mineralization.
Palatinose is produced by German do-good’ers, Beneo.
About the vitamins: Vitamin C contributes to normal functioning of the nervous system, psychological function and energy yielding metabolism. The latter is also true for vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid), which also contributes to normal mental performance.
